How Have Changes In The World Economy Since 1945 Affected Room For Maneuver Of Multinational Firms - Essay Example The World War of 1945 proved to be a massive disaster for world’s economy with its most effects on the European countries and Japan. These two countries were considered to be the greatest raw material suppliers throughout the world which significantly fell down in the war years. All these reasons altogether along with the help from some undamaged countries like USA and Canada helped them in the recovery phase. It was seen after 5 years, in the available statistics of 1950 that the GNP and income levels of most of the affected countries was way more than it was in 10 years before the war in 1930s. USA had played a significant role in world economy after the world war. Right after the world war the European countries faced shortage of fuel, food and resources. The only country who could have helped them with its undamaged economy was USA, but to buy all these resources huge reserves of dollars were required and dollar shortage was faced. It seemed in that era that all the world’s resources were shifting from Europe to North American regions and the US economy boomed and it looked it would be impossible to catch up with such an economy which is richer in resources and is the hub of investment. This era give US the opportunity to utilize its resources to the maximum and US utilized this well. These reasons mainly later on accounted for the economic crisis in 1970s. The poverty and problems increased in the world economy with an increasing trend of international division of labor introduced by the uncontrolled activities of multinationals all over the world. The result of this unequal distribution in the world’s economy lead to unequal and imbalanced international relationships among highly industrialized and experts and monopoly of industrial research and technology a nd peripheral countries which were dependent on few industries but were technologically controlled by the transnational companies. For this research the attempt is made to understand the Telecom Industry of India. . I will also complement this with the internal study of companies. By studying their history, growth, market share and advertising strategies adopted by Vodafone, Airtel, Reliance communication, BSNL and Idea cellular. India telecommunication industry is one of the fastest telecom market in the world. The mobile sector has grown from around 10 million subscribers in 2002 to reach 250 million by early 2009 registering an average growth of over 90%. The project is based on advertising so I will first explained about advertising, its importance, managing advertising decisions and types of advertising. I have analyzed the growth in ad volumes of telecom sector, share of telecom sector advertising, segment wise growth in telecom sector, share of key players in advertising, new brands advertised in telecom equipments and service and share of sales promotion in telecom sector. The sources of data collection used in the study are both primary and secondary in nature. We are going to conduct a survey to know the impact of advertisements of telecom industry on customers which is part of primary data. The real aim of the project is to study the effectiveness and response towards advertisements provided by major players. Primary data has been collected in which focus group study had been conducted to design the customer survey questionnaire with a sample size of 200 respondents. This survey has been conducted in gujarat. Secondary data is to be collected through websites, newspapers, magazines and books. Research objectives. The objective of the project is an attempt to understand the consumer preference for telecom and how it is been affected by the advertisement done by the telecom industries main players. It will be done through a comparative study of all telecom operators which are available in Ahmedabad; we want to understand the impact of advertisement on the customers of all the segments in Ahmedabad. We have also divided our objective into two categories to make it more clear, which is as follows: Primary objective The primary objective is to know the impact of advertisement by telecom industry on customers. And to study the effectiveness and response towards advertisement provided by the major players. Also to understand the improvement and customers preference in telecom sector. And to study the service provider and their service quality in telecom sector. Secondary objective Other than the above primary objective, the other secondary objective behind this project is to find out who is the best preferred telecom company who has the attracted maximum customers through its advertisement. ÂÂ   To know regarding the telecom sector in India I have studied various papers and journal written by many journalist and economist which are as follow: Anand (1999), in his article named Indias economic policy reforms says that India was embarked on economic reforms in July 1991, in the wake of a balance of payments crisis. In this article, an attempt is made to review two books and a set of World Bank reports concerning the progress of these reforms. Issues concerning economic policy, impact of the reforms on poverty, sectoral issues relating to agriculture, industry and infrastructure are briefly discussed. As reforms enter a more difficult phase, several challenges remain. Some of this fall under the economic agenda of measures needed to maintain economic growth; others can be termed the development agenda of improving human development. Progress with regard to the former is not sufficient to produce results concerning the latter. Bhattacharya (2000) constructs a vision of the Indian telecommunication sector for the year 2020. The paper aims at isolating agents of change based on international experiences and situates India in the development continuum. The agents of change have been broadly categorized into economic structure, competition policy and technology. Das (2000), in her paper described the Liberalisation of the Indian telecommunications services which started in mid nineties with no change in the existing public monopoly structure, entirely controlled by Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In order to evaluate any proposed industry structure, it is essential to analyse the production technology of DoT so as to determine the rationale of liberalisation and sustainability of competition. Accordingly, the researcher estimates a frontier multi-product cost function for DoT, where the cost function has been duly modified to account for the production technology of a public monopoly. The study finds that although DoT displays high allocation inefficiency, it is still a natural monopoly with very high degree of sub additively of cost of production. This study implies that the choice of any reform policy should consider the trade-off between the loss of scale and scope economies and cost saving from the reduction in inefficiency of th e incumbent monopoly in the event of competition. Rao (2000), in her article named Internet service providers in India, provides a broad view of the role of an Internet service provider (ISP) and the factors to be considered before entering the ISP market. Describes the Internet/ISP scene within India and discusses the configuration of local, regional and national level ISPs, and the supporting infrastructure. She also identifies the various success factors. The global Internet scenario is discussed regarding the phases of the Internet in India, i.e. pre and post commercialization. The main players are described: ERNET, NICNET, STPI, VSNL, MTNL, Satyam Infoway and Bharti-BT. The financial and legal implications are highlighted in the Indian context. He foresees a sector that represents humongous opportunity waiting to be tapped by Indian and foreign conglomerates. Thomas (2007), in his article describes the contribution made by telecommunications in India by the state and civil society to public service, this article aims to identify the states initial reluctance to recognize telecommunications provision as a basic need as against the robust tradition of public service aligned to the postal services and finds hope in the renewal of public service telecommunications via the Right to Information movement. The article follows the methodology of studying the history of telecommunications approach that is conversant with the political economy tradition. It uses archival sources, personal correspondence, and published information as its research material. The findings of the paper suggests that public service in telecommunication is a relatively new concept in the annals of Indian telecommunications and that a de- regulated environment along with the Right to Information movement holds significant hope for making public service telecommunications a real alternative. The article provides a reflexive, critical account of public service telecommunications in India and suggests that it can be strengthened by learning gained from the continual renewal of public service ideals and action by the postal services and a people-based demand model linked to the Right to Information Movement. The company has seen the rural market as an opportunity not just an obligation to be served because of universal service obligations. Also this article demonstrates that MNOs can deliver availability and affordability to achieve increased individual or household penetration through business model innovation. Mani (2008) addresses a number of issues arising from the growth of telecom services in India since the mid-1990s. It also discusses a number of spillover effects for the rest of the economy and one of the more important effects is the potential to develop a major manufacturing hub in the country for telecom equipment and for downstream industries such as semiconductor devices. The telecom industry in India could slowly become an example of the service sector acting as a fillip to the growth of the manufacturing sector. A beginning towards this has been made. In a country like India which has a problem of massive unemployment, the manufacturing sector should be promoted to create more employment opportunities. The study suggests that though there is no sign of slowdown in this sector, but surely a strong turmoil is going on in the industry. The Imperfection of Translation      Ã‚     The essential problem with translation is an obvious one. A word has more qualities than just its denotation. For one, a word has a sound, an attribute which has great importance in poetry (though we should not underestimate its significance in prose, as well). Also, a word consists of various connotations, meanings which only rarely cross over from language to language. Complicating matters is the nature of literature itself. Writers and poets put pressure on the language; they often choose words because of their rich variety of meanings, complicating rather than clarifying their subjects. Unfortunately, then, for the translator of literature, the currency of words is not as easy to exchange as the other kind of currency.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   E. V. Rieu recognizes the inherent difficulty of translation. Perfect translation may be impossible, so the best we can hope for, he writes in the following, is a translation of the spirit of the work: "I call it the principal of equivalent effect and regard it as signifying that that translation is the best which comes nearest to creating in its audience the same impression as was made by the original on its contemporaries" (55). Rieu criticizes the translators of the King James Version of the Bible for remaining stubbornly faithful to the original language. Here he presents a parable, the moral of which is undoubtedly weakened by awkward translation.    St. Luke in xvii. 8 reports Jesus as imagining a scene in which a master says to his slave, "Get something ready for my supper." The Greek is colloquial and the master is not represented as speaking politely. Yet the authorized translators put into his mouth the words: "Make ready wherewith I may sup." (55)    In that example the superiority of Rieu's plain-spoken translation is obvious, but it begs the question of how much freedom does one give a translator. Rieu's ideal that a translated work must cause "the same impression" as the original seems to give scholars license to embellish.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Werner Winter believes that, regardless of the degree of embellishment, translation cannot avoid altering the work. Try as we might, Winter writes, "Meaning and form cannot be dissociated from one another" (70).

Life Cycle of Sperm and Egg Essay

When asked how did I get pregnant? It seems like a rhetorical question. Of course many would say well you had sex Watson. That is a no brainer, but in all actuality that is not the extent of the answer. How do we become pregnant? What happens in order for that miracle we call life to be created? The egg develops during the first phase of the Menstrual Cycle. This first phase is called the Proliferative Phase. This phase begins at the end of your menstruation and last about 9 to 10 days during the average 28-day cycle. The ovaries then prepare for the ovulation within a phase called the preovulatory phase or the follicular phase. At this time there are low levels of estrogen and progesterone in the woman’s blood stream. A report by Spencer A. Rathus, Jeffrey S. Nevid, and Lois Fichner-Rathus (2011) explains that the hypothalamus senses a low level of estrogen in the blood; it then increases secretion of Gn-RH, which in turn triggers the pituitary gland to release a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Thus after this occurs the FSH stimulates follicles to mature and then proceeds to create estrogen. In a normal situation only one follicle will reach true maturity in the days proceeding to ovulation. This then leads to maturity of the graafian follicle. As it matures like any budding child that blossoms and grow out of their clothes, this specific follicle starts to move toward the surface of the ovary and then eventually release itself after rupturing. During the rupturing process this follicle releases a mature egg. After the egg is released the endometrium in the uterus starts to thicken due to the about of estrogen. Glands will eventually develop and these glands will help to feed any embryo that may possibly exist. A thin cervical mucus is stimulated by the estrogen as well which will also provide for nourishment for the sperm, increasing the chances of the sperms survival rate. The second phase of the cycle is the ovulatory phase, which involves the process in accordance the mature follicle egg being released. There is a misconception that the egg is released into the fallopian tube when in all actuality it is released near the tube itself. This phase begins with the estrogen levels peak. The third phase f the cycle is called the postuvulary phase or the secretory phase. Another name for this phase is the Luteal Phase, which derives from the name of the ruptured follicle (â€Å"Corpus Luteum†). Due to the influence the LH has on the Corpus Luteum the levels of estrogen are increasing as well as the levels of progesterone. Just like in the second phase when you reach this phase and the levels peak once again and keeping in mind the egg has remained in the ovary. Within a normal 28-day cycle this tends to occur on either the 20 or 21st day. Hormones at this time cause the glands to release nutrients that will provide for any fertilized ovum that may become implanted in the woman’s uterine wall. Picture a spider and its web and you’ve got the just of this phase. If the egg does not implant then the production of LH and FSH stops. The fourth and last phase occurs when the decrease of estrogen and progestone levels are no longer supporting the uterine lining. This cycle is also seen as the beginning and the end because the cycle not only end but also begins again. Most women would wish the cycle would not repeat itself but unfortunately someone had a sense of humor when they thought of ways to make things uncomfortable with a woman at least once a week for a few days. Just like everything else in life when God made man and women he made development easier on men. This is why I would assume that God must be a male. Even though the woman has four stages in order to reach the development of eggs a man’s sperm development is a little more basic and no bleeding necessary. The development of the sperm also has many stages and these stages take up to 72 days for the testes to develop a mature sperm. It seems everything must be mature enough to make any journey in life including eggs and sperm. It’s like sending your kids off to college once they have passed all the phases of life and have graduated to the last step. In the beginning the sperm is called spermatocytes which contain 46 chromosomes which of course would be the famous letters x and y. Each spermatocyte then divides or divorces and splits it assets in half and when divided it is then called a spermatid. Each spermatid at that time will house 23 chromosomes half will have x and half will have y. Once the sperm matures it is then called a spermatozoa, which have a head, a cone-shaped midsection, and a tail. Just like anything the core that is the mid section provide the energy for the swimming power or for the tail to swim back and forth. For fertilization to occur 23 chromosomes from the father’s sperm meet a secret location and â€Å"hook up† (since there was no courting involved) with the 23 chromosomes from the mother’s ovum. This of course would make up the 46. I wonder if this is what they meant when they said it takes two to tango. With all that is going on inside our bodies there is also so much that we already know such as the testicles are like a storage container for sperm and house all the little fellas waiting for a raise to begin. For a woman it is more of a hid and seek game. Finding the egg that is attached to our walls and locking all doors waiting to see if any sperm can pick the lock. We never take the time out to see all that we truly are and before having the obstacle course begin in our bodies it is good to know what exactly is going on and how these things truly do occur.

American Beauty: Of Adulthood and Life Transitions

American Beauty is one of the most well-received movies of our time. As the screen debut of screenwriter Alan Ball and director Sam Mendes, the movie has won numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It was a good demonstration of different psychological and social themes such as deviancy, romantic and paternal love, sexuality, and beauty.The movie’s focus is Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey). In fact, as the narrator, Lester is the revolving point of most of the movie. American Beauty paints how he was a year before he died and how he’s changed through the year that eventually led to his death.But the movie also focused on other interesting characters – most notable of which are his wife Carolyn (Annette Bening), daughter Jane (Thora Birch), Janes’ friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari), and the neighbor Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley). Almost all of these characters undergo a specific ‘deviant’ nature and are almost on either poles of the social sph ere.Watching Lester, Carolyn, Jane, Angela, and Ricky, one realizes that people really do change behavior based on previous experiences. Although Berk (2004), in her book Development Through the Life Span, talked mainly about the change of relationship between parent and child through operant conditioning, this discussion is useful in explaining the hostile relationship between Jane and her parents.As Jane has come to learn from previous experiences, any attempt at trying to bond the family falls into deaf ears; hence, she’s taken to keeping her mouth shut and maintaining a distant stance from her father and mother.Perhaps, this type of learning can also aid in understanding Angela. She is naturally insecure and afraid of being thought ‘ordinary’. But she’s learned that putting up a front and projecting a brazen image elicits a positive response from men; since this eliminates her fears of being just a common person, she has maintained the said image.Leste r and Carolyn also demonstrate how adults react differently when on the brink of transitioning from their prime to old age. Lester copes with his shift to old age in a different manner than Carolyn in the sense that he’s preferred to be â€Å"sedated†, to use his own terms.He felt that everything in his life was going downhill: he was losing his job, he hasn’t had sex with his wife in a long time, and he just doesn’t find any aspects of his life exciting. Yet given the right stimuli (in the person of Angela, whom he is obviously attracted to), he realizes that aging should not be the end of his life.He starts working out and bettering himself. He shows – through his decision to quit his job, resume his teenage job as a fast food employee, and buy his dream car – that sometimes, people regress while moving towards old age.Carolyn, however, has an opposite reaction. Knowing that she now only has limited time, she goes down the serious route. S he became more focused on her career and had little time left for personal pleasure.Jane and Angela on the other hand, show teenagers metamorphosing into adults. Jane, realizing that most teenagers her age are already forming well-developed breasts, reacts to her maturation by desiring breast augmentation.Angela, though, who projects a confident stance, does not do – or wish to do – anything as drastic. In fact, it seems that she is unmindful of the possible biological changes that adulthood might bring to her current ‘good looks’.Lester’s obsession with Angela has given him an energy boost. Suddenly, he finds the guts to stand up to his wife and demand for what he wants. Then he gets involved in a fitness regimen and dives into the use of marijuana (which he purchases from Ricky).This has eventually led to drastic changes in his family life: Carolyn and he find themselves quarreling in front of Jane, who naturally forms greater hatred for her paren ts.Early in the film and towards the middle part, we get a glimpse at how Ricky feels about death. He thinks that death is nothing to worry about and is something interesting to watch. This was apparent in the scene where he was filming a dead bird and describes it as â€Å"beautiful†.And the death of Lester reinforces this: examining Lester’s bloody body, Ricky utters, â€Å"Wow.† Lester also portrays a way of coping with death. Through his narration, he describes death as a sort of freedom and a culmination of everything that is happy.Using Lester as a narrator, Ball speaks of how â€Å"the after life† does exist and how it is something that we all have to go through at one point in our lives.American Beauty is not just another pretty, award-winning movie.
